KETO GENIC DIET MODE : ARE YOU KETO????

POINT OF VIEW / Are you on the ketogenic diet? Apparently, several people have joined or tried it over the past year.

This is the most popular food trend in North America today. For the past 12 months, the word "Keto" has been the most searched Google topic for food around the world, not just in Canada. The ketogenic diet is certainly not for everyone, but the numbers show that this trend isn't going away anytime.

LInstead, the ketogenic, carbohydrate-free diet encourages members to ingest more protein and fat. There are of course different types of ketogenic diets out there, but overall it's all about reducing carbohydrate intake. Developed and christened in the 1920s to treat a variety of conditions including epilepsy, the "Keto" diet, as many people call it, plunges the human body's metabolism into a state of ketosis. Ketosis occurs when your body metabolizes fat instead of carbohydrates for energy. In other words, with less sugar the body will eventually lose weight.

It also helps control diabetes. Foods not allowed on a ketogenic diet include sugary foods, grains and starches, bread, alcohol, most fruits, beans and legumes.

A nightmarish proposition for some since we have to do without several good products. But for those trying to lose weight fast, this diet seems like the long-awaited miracle recipe. However, some research suggests that people who exercise vigorously are not recommended to follow this diet because it can restrict the body's access to sugars during a strenuous workout.

No one knows for sure how many Canadians are on the ketogenic diet. In reality, a person could have two or three types of diets in the same day. We all have a different approach to eating because we have different needs and tastes. Most of us don't name our food.

So, the ketogenic or other names we give to diets are effectively just names. Even though we don't know the rate of adoption of the ketogenic diet, we believe that number is increasing.

A recent poll conducted by Dalhousie University tells us that 26% of Canadians have either adopted the keto diet or tried it in the past 18 months. In fact, one of the best-selling food books in Canada is about the ketogenic diet.

The ketogenic diet has the particularity of revealing many food products indicating their ketogenic compatibility. These labels are found everywhere and there is even Keto bread. Many food products launched on the market target consumers who follow this diet. However, even though it has been around for decades, little is known about the suitability of the ketogenic diet for the average person.

Many studies are underway to better understand this diet and its repercussions. Anyone who is considering adopting the Keto Diet should exercise great caution and consult their doctor first.

Choosing to follow the ketogenic diet also comes at a price. A recent report suggests that it costs between 5-10% more than a normal unrestricted diet. The extra fat and protein will come at a price, although the differential is not significant.

From one regime to another, from one fad to another, the sector innovates. With the exception of the last two or three years, few innovative ideas in the food industry have seen the light of day. When a move like this becomes big, a whole host of possibilities open up for the industry.

The “gluten-free” and “reduced in fat” phases as well as the movements to buy “local”, “natural” and “organic” bear a particularly important meaning for the development of the sector. An opening that leads to more diversified food products, better adapted to modern lifestyles, and which offers a better quality of life to consumers.

It's hard to say where the keto diet trend is going to take us. The diet itself is still a mystery to many, but it seems that a growing number of consumers swear by 'Keto', and everyone wins.
